Can you feel it? The change in the air? We can!!! We love this time of year... the time when we sadly miss Summer, but gladly welcome Autumn... because Winter is right around the corner!!!

We're amped for another season, taking our boards and gear out and lovingly displaying everything out on the floor and our beds, admiring our collection, getting ready to ride again. We get to see friends that maybe we only see in the lift lines or chalet, we winterize our cars and dream of new tricks and create goals for the season. Ahhh...

Look over all of your gear... do you need anything new? (I ripped the butt of my pants on my last day of riding in the Spring - haha!) Now is a great time to invest in something new and start the season out fresh. Think hard about last season... Did you end up wearing the same long underwear over and over again? Did you wear the hoodie religiously? Did your snowpants get all muddied up in the Spring? Are your gloves too stinky? Hat lost its shape?

On Jan 23rd, 2010, the 1st Annual International Ladies Shred Day occurred. Rosa Snow sponsored each event, along with various local supporters. Our Minneapolis hometown event was held at Afton Alps and it was a blast!!!

We had a range of skill levels and ages participate in the event. We woke up early to a slight drizzle outside (boo) but by the time the first beginner lesson started it was warm with perfect snow conditions. The beginner lessons were a total success: we started from scratch with the basics, worked on skills on the bunny hill, and then took the chairlift up for a longer, steeper slope... everyone was rockin' it!!! After a short break, we went on a "group shred" which was quite the spectacle: we all sported our limited edition pink bandanas and dominated the hill in the RAIN! Yup, it started full-on raining! The group gathered back in our club-house to dry off and for a free raffle. Every girl won some sweet gear which was generously donated by our supporters. After the raffle, we all kept riding & had an after-party in Paul's Pub. It was perfect.

All of our participants, and especially the beginners, were so grateful to have had this opportunity, and we received tons of positive feedback, awesome comments, and many thank yous. We created a new community of girl-riders, as we all made friendships and shared a special bond from participating in the event.

A bit about Ladies Shred Day
Our goal is to make the perfect day for girls to learn how to ride. We use the best teaching techniques and leverage off the girls’ energy and camaraderie to help them succeed.

The scoop:
We find volunteer instructors who tailor the teaching to never-ever and intermediate girl riders then get the biggest deals possible for trips to push the industry for ladies, even-out the shred ratio, and have a fun outdoor girls' event that brings a positive sense of camaraderie and energy to those first few challenging days on the slopes...

Only criteria:
1. Girls Only
2. Free lessons (All levels, lessons tailored to women) and discount tickets/rentals
3. Must be held at a resort CLOSE to the city
4. Events end by mid-afternoon (with optional after parties)
5. Girls leave STOKED!!!! (Duh)

On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the First Annual International Ladies Shred Day occurred. A bunch of girls across the globe participated in the event which featured FREE beginner lessons, reduced lift tickets, all sorts of goodies, and most importantly, the chance to ride with other girls of all skill levels in a fun, supportive environment.

It was truly amazing and we will write more soon & post pics from all the various events. For now, we're still buzzing from the energy and need a chance to chill out!

A HUGE thank-you to the hard-working event planners who organized each event out of their own pure love of snowboarding & their desire to get more girls on boards. Seriously, seriously... we cannot describe the love we have for "Cilla" layers. We'll admit, at first we were a little uneasy about the "Miss" bottoms, until we tried them on and fell in love!!! They are truly a girl's best friend and we wish every rider sported a pair... they transition well from a base-layer to a chillin' in the lodge pant. Yeah, they seem a little silly-looking, but wait until you wear them under your snowpants... it's like... it's undescribable! Like cloud-pants!

A few years ago, a trend started in snowboarding where people wore unconventional XL tall tees hanging out from the bottom of their jackets to add personal flair to their outerwear. International Ladies Shred Day

Coming to a city near you? We will have more information on this event... consider this a sneak peak and keep an eye out for an event in your state (or country!) To date events are confirmed in Minneapolis, Chicago, Milwaukee, Colorado (Summit County), Washington (multiple locations), and Germany with more cities being added...

What started as “Girls Can Shred Too” day in the Midwest has evolved into an International event. Last year, over 75 women came out and became addicted to the sport and bought full snowboard set-ups before the season's end. This year, with one of the organizers moving to Germany, it seemed only natural to expand the event to a global scale. Organized by passionate snowboarders, the grass-roots event has gained the support of sponsors, shops and resorts in the U.S.A. and abroad. The event will be held on Saturday, January, 23, 2010 across the globe.

Ladies Shred Day is a non-competitive, day-long event focused on camaraderie and learning in a fun, supportive environment. The event invites women of all ages and all skill levels to participate, providing free female-friendly lessons, discounted lift-tickets and rentals, and the opportunity to meet other riders and learn more about snowboarding.

Head organizer, Kassandra Cassily, who has taught snowboard lessons in China, Michigan, and California started the event last season after noticing one consistent trend: guys always outnumber girls on the slopes. It seemed that most females couldn’t get past the first hard day on the slopes and were too self-conscious to learn with guys around. Kassandra noted, “Girls liked physic breakdowns of how the sport works and learned fastest when able to do flatland statics before trying things on slope, but most guys were pretty fine with more of a ‘monkey-see-monkey-do’ teaching technique.” Thus came the idea for the ideal girls only beginner snowboard day: “Our goal is to make the perfect day for girls to learn how to ride. We use the best teaching techniques and leverage off the girls’ energy and camaraderie to help them succeed.”

Boarding for Breast Cancer

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and there are many ways for people to show their support in the research and awareness of breast cancer. One unique way for those who participate in winter sports such as snowboarding and skiing is to purchase and wear Boarding for Breast Cancer (B4BC) items. Although we typically associate the color “pink” with breast cancer, B4BC items run the color palette and often include artist-collaboration prints and designs.

Most companies have dedicated one or more products to represent their B4BC support, where a portion of the sale is donated to B4BC. Off-Season Fitness Training for Snowboarding

Return to the slopes this winter ready for action! Rosa Snow contacted fitness expert Sara Johnson of Harbor Athletic Club near Madison, Wisconsin to ask her advice on how to keep those snowboarding muscles toned over the Summer. Sara is an ACSM Certified Personal Trainer and a snowboarder.

SEE THE FULL WORKOUT

This routine will help strengthen the middle of the body and hips (core) and the lateral muscles of the legs that support the knees and hips.

Plank Hold: Do 3 sets of a 30 second hold. Work up to 1 minute after doing this for a few weeks. Begin on elbows and toes (facing the ground.) If possible, lift opposite elbow and foot off of the ground a couple of inches; alternate sides. Be sure not to hold your breath.

Wall Sit: Squat against a wall. Make sure to maintain about 90 degrees at your knees. Keep breathing! Hold for 1 minute. Rest, repeat.

Squat Jumps: Bend your knees deeply (unless this bothers your knees). Jump straight up as high as you can. Make sure that your knees stay hip-width apart on your take-off and landing.

Calf Raises: Find a step. Stand on the ball of one foot. Lift heel as high as you can, pause at the top, drop the heel until you feel a little stretch in your calf, and repeat. Hold a dumbbell in your hand once you have done this exercise a couple weeks. Repeat on the other leg.

Ever wondered what a "Ninja Cuff" is? Or, what's the difference between "Waterproof" and "Water Resistant" anyways, huh?

Yes, friends, the Fashion Industry has many terms that, well, don't always seem to differ from one another, yet, are highlighted as key features in a garment. And since the terminology could be a factor in your purchasing decision, we've created a handy-dandy Glossary of Terms often used in apparel descriptions, specifically in outerwear and snow-clothing.

By the way, "Ninja Cuffs" are when fabric is attached on a sleeve of a jacket designed to fit over the thumb to provide additional coverage of the wrist—keeps wind and snow from entering at the cuff.

And "Water Resistant" is a material that repels water for a short time, but is not thoroughly waterproof. Not to be confused with water-repellent. However, the terms are often used interchangeably.

"Waterproof" is the proper term for materials that are impermeable by water. A term applied to fabrics whose pores have been closed, and therefore, will not allow water or air to pass through them.

The RECCO Avalanche Rescue System

Fresh snowfall and steep slopes may mean great snowboarding or skiing but they also can create avalanche conditions. Is it possible to survive an avalanche? Figures reported in the journal Nature from way back in 1994 show that about 90 % of avalanche victims are alive after 5 minutes but that after 30 minutes less than 50% are. Clearly locating the avalanche victim quickly is critical to survival. That is why the technology utilized in the RECCO system is so awesome.

The system essentially has two parts: reflectors implanted into the apparel of the avalanche victim and a detector unit carried by the rescue party. The victim’s precise location can be pinpointed using harmonic radar. A detector carried by the ski patrol or ski-resort-based rescue teams sends out a signal on a specific frequency which bounces back if the signal comes across a reflector. The reflectors are about ½” by 2” in size and many high-end manufacturers are placing them into boots, jackets, helmets or other gear.

Rock N Ride & Spring Fling at Afton Alps!

Days grow longer, sun gets stronger, snow begins to melt, but we don't stop til we get enough! It was a big party Saturday 3/14 out at Afton Alps in Minnesota that went all day and into the night. It was gorgeous weather with fun, buttery snow. The Spring Fling brings out the crazy in people! Outdoor bar & grilling, music, a huge water-skip, swimsuit racing, fun and games, and hilarious steez! Along with that was the Final 93X Rock N Ride & GromFest Qualifiers. The kids threw down with the heart & soul you'd expect from Midwest rockstars. What made you decide to start Rosa Snow?

I was hooked on snowboarding after the first day I tried it, but when I went to local shops to get gear, there was just nothing for girls! And all the employees were guys, which was really awkward for me, since I was 12. The desire never faded to provide another retail option for girls only. I think a lot of shops have gotten better and are more accessible, and online shopping has become more popular, but I still haven’t been 100% satisfied. To be honest, I am not a huge fan of getting my gear at Malls and like to support independent shops. So I decided to live the dream!

Where are you based?

Rosa Snow is based in Minneapolis, MN. It’s really great being in the Midwest, too, because we are centrally located in the U.S. and Minneapolis/St.Paul is a huge metropolis with many great opportunities and culture. Have you ever heard the expression “Minnesota Nice?” It’s true! People are great!

Pro-rider for Omatic, Josh Sherman, presented the 3rd Annual Rail Jam as a tribute to his alumni hill, Tyrol Basin. The tricks we saw were so sick, we felt bad for the judges...

Every year the Snow Sports Industry gathers in Las Vegas for the biggest event in the business: SIA Snowsports Trade Show. 2009 marked the final year in Vegas, so it was extra special (next year the show moves to Denver, CO) and Rosa Snow was there for the fun.

The show brings the entire market together in one place to showcase next year's product lines and styles from nearly 1,000 brands, making it one of the most important trade events for the snow sports industry. It is truly a spectacular event in itself, but the parties and other events off the tradeshow floor make it a destination not to be missed.

Rosa Snow attended SIA to check out the latest trends in outerwear and gear for the 2009-2010 Season, and it is incredible how things just keep getting better! Don't get us wrong, it is a lot of hard work and can be exhausting, but there were some really fun parties that were unforgettable... the final year in Vegas will be remembered fondly.

We were lucky enough to get VIP seating at the Transworld Riders Poll Awards held at "The Joint" at the Hard Rock Hotel, attended by snowboarding legends and soon-to-be legends alike, along with a grip of fun people in the industry.

The Otto Breitenbach Spirit of the Games Award was created and is given annually to an individual or group of individuals who embody the excitement and enthusiasm for sports and the Winter Games. The individual receiving the award this year goes to a participant, who has an intense passion for her sport and spends much of her time training and competing, but who also used her talent to unselfishly help someone away from her sport.

Katie B. Wilson, at the age of 11, is already an accomplished snowboarder seeking a podium spot at the USA Snowboard Association National Championships at Copper Colorado, but it is for her actions off the hill that she is being recognized as the 2009 Spirit of the Games Award winner.

After enrolling in a new school this fall, Katie became friends with a girl who, not unlike herself, enjoys being physically active. After a typical fall semester, her friend had an atypical doctor’s appointment and found out she had cancer.

Katie felt heartbroken that her new friend was so sick and wanted to do something to make her feel better. She called upon the friends she’s made through snowboarding from across the country of all ages. She decided to appeal to them on her friend’s behalf.

Hi everyone!

I have been very sad the last couple of days. My friend Gina, went to the doctor for a regular well-check-up and found out she has cancer. She has two tumors, one just above her heart and one pushing on her trachea. She has been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. It is very sad and scary to think she was at my house for a Halloween party and a few weeks later she has cancer. (she is only 11 just like me)

Gina is very brave, and is my hero. She tries to find smiles when she can. The one thing she is really worried about is losing her hair. She starts chemo today. As many of you know I make snowboard hats, and yes I am making her one…. but she is so sad and worried about how she is going to look after she looses her hair. Just one hat isn’t cool when you feel so yucky and lose your hair…… a girl needs CHOICES you know!

So I thought….. HEY…. Snowboarders have the BEST hats around! I want to make her smile and feel COOL again! So I need your help! I decided to start a hat drive for Gina! I am asking everyone I know to send me a hat. Gina is fighting for her life; I want her to feel cool and loved and not worry about her hair or how she looks. She is so pretty! So if you could help me with the hats that would really cheer her up!

Thanks SOOOO much for helping me make her smile again.

Katie B. Wilson

Katie feels blessed to have a gift, her snowboarding talent, and she wanted to use her gift to help her friend. Katie’s mission to make Gina smile has turned into a larger mission. She intends to keep collecting hats throughout the snowboard season, as well as continue making them, and every year deliver the hats to the children’s cancer unit at Children’s Hospital on Thanksgiving.

Even though their friendship is new found, it has changed both the girls’ lives forever. Katie looks forward to the day Gina can get back to being active; and in a vast array of stylish hats.

Snowboarding Goggle Buying Guide

Snowboard Goggles are a girl-boarders must-have item, no matter where, when, or how much you ride. They can make or break your riding experience. Not only do they allow you to SEE where you're going, they protect your face from the wind, air and snow, providing added warmth to your overall body temp.

You wouldn't go down the hill with a blindfold on, would you? (Well, maybe you would, but we don't recommend it!) Check out our tips on how to select the best snowboard or ski goggle, and check out our Goggle Lens Color Chart on RosaSnow.com to see which lens is optimal for your riding conditions.

Flexible frame and face foam which allows goggles to fit evenly and snugly on the face. The goggle should not have any gaps which allow air to seep in and cause fogging. Women boarders tend to have smaller faces than men so Rosa Snow suggests goggles designed for women. Because they are made with thermo-polyurethane frames which remain flexible in even the coldest weather, Rosa Snow carries the Von Zipper “Sizzle” designed for women snowboarders and the Von Zipper "Chakra" goggle which has a smaller frame.

Wide peripheral vision: The frequent stops and turns of snowboarding require exceptional awareness of what’s out there everywhere—not just in front.

Anti-fog coating—this very smooth surface provides nothing for fog to cling to—it condenses and slides off instead.

A Hardshell Goggle Case will protect your goggles and spare lenses.

A Microfiber Cloth is great to carry around with you, or keep in your bag, case or car so you can give your lenses a thorough wipe-down and get rid of smudges. Some goggles come in a microfiber bag that doubles as a wipe, but if you want a spare, you can pick up a "glasses cleaning cloth" or computer screen wipe.

Once you have those perfect goggles to hit the slopes just a few more tips:

Keep those goggles on–taking them on and off in the lift lines increases the chance of fogging.
Clean exterior lens but avoid rubbing interior lens so you don’t rub off anti-fog coating
Store your goggles in their protective case when not in use.

Clear lenses are best for stormy conditions or for riding at night.
Yellow lenses are best for overcast (low light / flat light) days.
Rose or Pink lenses increase contrast in most conditions. A pink lens with chrome / silver gun mirror is ideal for most riding conditions.
Orange lenses are great for bright days as they increase contrast. Choose a mirrored (chrome) lens for the bright conditions.
Polarized lenses cut glare that reflects from snow or ice.

Winter Health Tips

The short days. The cold, dry air. The comfort foods. Ahhh, yes, Winter can really knock us down. But if you want to be able to keep on snowboarding, then remember, prevention is easier than finding a cure. Here are a few tips to keep you "on board" this season:

Stay hydrated!!! And we don’t just mean drinking the recommended 8 glasses of water a day... use moisturizers on your face, lips and body, preferably with a high SPF factor to act as a barrier against sun and wind. Invest in a reusable water bottle, too, so you don't make waste.

Eat well: Nuts high in protein and B vitamins, FRESH fruits and veggies like berries and carrots, Good soups which can help relieve inflammation caused by sore throats, Avocados, Oily fish like salmon, Chicken and Eggs... basically, when you’re on or off the hill, strive to eat fresh foods. We know it’s hard to resist cheese curds, but maybe start packing your own snacks for the day, ok?

Get your Vitamins and Minerals: Take a multivitamin! Our favorite is Vitamin C known for its strong antioxidant qualities, it reduces the chances of getting a cold AND reduces the amount of time of illness.

Dress appropriately - wear layers! Make sure to keep your car, home and workplace comfortable as well. It’s easier to take layers off and cool down than it is to try to warm up!

Exercise! We guess you’re already out snowboarding, but keep it up when you’re off the slopes! Maintaining an exercise regime will benefit you on so many levels: increasing metabolism, boosting the immune system, improving muscle and joint function, AND exercise releases endorphins which make you HAPPY!!! (This is especially helpful if you get the Winter blues) Get a good mix of cardio, strength and stretching.

SLEEP! Our immune system works really hard during sleep to fight and prevent illness. It gives our brain a chance to relax and sort itself out, and it allows our body tissues time to rest, recover and repair. A sleep deprived snowboarder is dangerous!

Rosa Snow's Tip: Go out to your car and take inventory. (The Rosa Snow-Mobile is always stocked! Nerd-alert!!) Make a little kit that you can easily take with you in the car. It could be an actual box or bag, or just have a set place in your own vehicle for everything.

Water bottle or cup/mug (if you can get a collapsible-type, that would be great!)
Sunscreen
Lipbalm (with SPF)
Some simple snacks that won't spoil: trail mix, dried fruit, granola bar (just remember to take them out at the end of the season if you haven't eaten them!!!)
A variety of pills & medications (get the trial size packets): aspirin, vitamins, cough drops, etc.
Tissues, napkins and/or bandana. Bonus if you keep wet-wipes in your car.
First Aid Kit: you can purchase a small one or make your own.
A few dollars. Quarters are ideal for vending machines.
Always keep a few blankets and maybe even a travel pillow in your car.
If you can, keep a change of clothes and extra set of everything in case you or a friend forget something: gloves, socks, goggles, hat, layers, etc.

So just a few pointers to keep you ladies healthy! Yeah, they are pretty simple, but we all need a reminder once in awhile!

iPod Saves Lost Snowboarder

LOS ALAMOS, N. M. (KRQE) - The light from a portable music player helped guide airborne rescuers to a lost snowboarder facing a second frigid night on a New Mexico mountain.

Sebastian Gomez disappeared while boarding in falling snow at the Pajarito Mountain Ski Area late Sunday afternoon. He and his best friend, Greg Blea, were on their last run in the mountains above Los Alamos when they became separated.

Blea told KRQE News 13 he stopped to clean his goggles, and that was the last he saw of Gomez.

"This was my buddy," Blea said. "We went up looking for him. I couldn't leave him alone."

More than 100 searchers hoofed through the deep and blowing snow along with the help from search dogs and snowmobiles. They never gave up.

But as Gomez was preparing for another long, cold night shortly after sunset, he found salvation in his pockets. As a Blackhawk rescue helicopter made a pass overhead, he waved his iPod music player and a lighter.

Those little lights caught the attention of crewmen wearing night-vision goggles. He was flown to the Los Alamos Medical Center where he was being held overnight mostly as a precaution with no signs of frostbite or serious injuries.

"I was really cold," Gomez said from a wheelchair at the medical center. "I had to build shelters at night to sleep because it snowed all night long.

"That was pretty eerie."

Rescuers found Gomez on the back side of the mountain in 4 feet of snow and about a mile outside the ski area. He said he never gave up hope and knew searchers would find him.

"I knew I was going to be OK," he said. "I didn't freak out or anything."

Word of the rescue sent family and friends into a frenzy. His mother, Janet Ashman, raced to search headquarters.

"Thank you so much," she said. "God bless you guys."

Later she told News 13, "I just want to say thank you to every single person who was giving their best in order to find him. He's on the helicopter, so we will have him soon."

Gomez is fortunate to have made it through this ordeal, and it was a long 24 hours for his mother as well.

"I suffered with her through much of today, and so to share the joy with the family finally, I'm so happy for them," Suzanne Johnston of the Pajarito Ski Patrol said.

Gomez said he doesn't know how he made it out of the ski area's boundaries. It was snowing so hard late Sunday afternoon he just didn't know where the run ended and the danger began.

Temperatures fell into the teens Sunday night, and during the day Monday wind-chill readings were near zero.

Beginners Guide to Rail Slides

Rails can be one of the most intimidating things to ride... it's pretty alien to ride on something other than snow... especially something that happens to be metal and dangerous. BUT they are totally doable.

Let's start with some basic tips:

Wear a helmet!!!
Learn to ollie and get air!
Have a well-tuned board. If you can swing it, get a good park-riding-board suitable for YOUR body.
Stretch out. If you're not feeling awesome and at the top of your game, don't even bother. Be balanced. Don't risk injury.
Ride where you feel comfortable: find a good park with a decent beginners rail-object, ideally low to the ground. It's best to learn in a park, or if you have a local spot (be legal and respectful) in your area, then that works, too!
Observe other riders and how they are performing on various rail-slide objects.
Remember that this can damage your board, so be sure to find non-abrasive surfaces. If your board slams on the rail too hard, it could break!
Don't attempt any of this until you are ready and comfortable in your skill level and on your board. Snowboarding is inherently dangerous that can result in injury or death. Patience is a virtue.
Have fun!!!

Steps to Beginning Rail Slides

1. We recommend taking a few runs as if you were about to hit the rail: start where you would start if you were going to hit it and figure out your speed. Ride to the side of the rail. It will ease your mind to know what it's like to ride so close to your object.

2. When you are ready to ride the rail, approach it with enough speed to make it, but be cautious, too.

3. Ollie / Jump up early and high enough to get up on to and over the object. Remember to always have a good stance with bent knees and remain loose.

4. Plant your board perpendicular for a rail slide or parallel for a 50/50 grind. We recommend starting with your board perpendicular. This will feel the most comfortable. (There are of course many variations and tricks, but that will come with time and practice)

5. Allow your speed and air to carry you across. Plant your board lightly and let your weight settle slowly onto the rail-object. Focus on the end of the slide to help you ride it all the way.

6. As your weight settles onto the object, be prepared for a change in speed. Metal will carry you faster than wood. Keep your center of gravity over the board. If you lean too far frontside or backside, your board could slip out from underneath you... this doesn't mean a major crash though... if you stay low and keep your cool, you can just ride it off.

7. Approaching the end of the slide, hop up slightly and straighten out your board so you can ride out forward.

girl who likes to break the rules). The rule I broke? I didn’t take the time to adequately warm up. I don’t want your body to feel the way I do today so I talked to snowboarder and fitness expert Sara Johnson of Harbor Athletic Club for some simple suggestions that women should

Top five features in a snowboarding jacket

A snowboarding jacket is a big purchase so Rosa Snow wants every woman to have exactly the right coat for her winter outdoor needs. We obviously want something that looks good but we want performance too. Here are five key things we look for.

Pockets—both inside and outside, especially internal pockets to stash those “gotta have but need to protect” items like your iPod , cell phone and cash/credit card. Easy-access external pockets for gloves, goggles, and chapstick are a must. Our fave feature? Clip for your car keys.

Vents—especially the pit-zip vents under the armpits. These allow for air flow on warm days or when you are really exerting yourself. A warm coat with vents gives you more flexibility—zip the vents when starting out in the morning but unzip in the sun or when you're hiking the park.

Anything that keeps the snow/wind out at those key locations—waist, neck, wrists. Look for elastic or Velcro at the wrist and drawstrings that are easy to tighten on the hood or bottom of the jacket. We also like snaps or other ways to connect pants and jackets to a prevent a gap. We especially dig ninja cuffs to seal the gap between your jacket sleeves and your mittens. We have to admit to taking an unexpected fall and a powder skirt or gaiter prevents snow from coming up inside the jacket or down your bum.

Removable & 2-in-1 features like hoods, vests or fleece liners which easily fasten in and out of the jacket. These make your jacket more flexible for weather changes. We especially love liners that can be worn separately indoors.

Fully Taped seams or Critically Seam Sealed—doesn’t seem like a big deal but it is. Sealed seems keep moisture from seeping in. Critically means they are only taped where wetness will most likely contact. Fully taped seams is just that, taped every where.

Coyote attacks snowboarder...

Snowboarding definitely has its risks, right? Not trying to scare anyone, just raise awareness ~ wildlife totally deserves respect and understanding. Coyotes are pretty much dogs, but like all animals, they can get aggressive, and ultimately, we want everyone to be safe! If you're wondering about a certain type of animal that's in your area, look it up online (check out your state's Department of Wildlife) and learn about 'em! Then enjoy yourself and go snowboarding!! Here's the article:

WELD COUNTY, CO - The Division of Wildlife has killed a coyote that snapped at a 9-year-old boy while he was out snowboarding.

The boy and his brother were snowboarding on the Vista Ridge Golf Course in Erie around 3:30 p.m. Thursday when the coyote circled the 9-year-old and lunged at him twice. The boy told his mother, and after she called Erie Police, she took him to Children's Hospital Clinic. He was released Friday morning.

The Division of Wildlife found a coyote near the golf course and killed it. As part of the normal procedure, it has been sent to a lab for testing.

"Coyotes are naturally fearful of humans, but occasionally a coyote becomes aggressive and must be removed for public safety," said Area Wildlife Manager Larry Rogstad. "It is imperative that people report encounters with aggressive coyotes right away so that we can monitor the activity and intervene when necessary."

The DOW says you should do the following if a coyote approaches you:

*Be as big, mean, and loud as possible.
*Wave your arms and throw objects at the coyote.
*Shout in a deep, loud and authoritative voice.
*Do not run or turn your back on the coyote.
*Face the coyote and back away slowly.
*If attacked, fight back with your fists and feet.

December 21st will be the date of the third annual World Snowboard Day which is an international event to celebrate snowboarding and its culture in more than twenty countries.

More than 60 resorts will take part in the event across over twenty countries including Austria, Poland, Hungary, France, Croatia, Russia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Italy, Spain, and the United States. Events to look out for include snowboard initiations and demos, parties, concerts, BBQ’s, environmental awareness and a host of other surprises.
